This is the first of several messages examining how Jesus is the fulfillment of the reality of sacred space. The phrase "sacred space" refers to God's active and interactive presence in His creation, particularly as it implicates His relationship with man, His image-bearer. Central to the idea of sacred space is the concept of "sanctuary" as a place where men can meet with and worship God. Israel's life with God was centered in the Lord's sanctuary in the midst of the nation, and the sanctuary (temple) theme plays an important role in the developing Old Testament promise of the kingdom. Inasmuch as Jesus' incarnational presence signaled the fulfillment of the Scriptures and the inbreaking of the kingdom, one would expect the temple motif to find its own fulfillment in Him. This is exactly what the gospel writers declare.
