All doctrine should inform daily living as well as lead to worship. We should remember that when we read passages such as the conclusion of Paul's Letter to the Ephesians which looks like no more than a collection of personal greetings. In fact, this is a practical example of how the epistle's teaching is put into practice. Three relationships are mentioned: Paul and the church; the church and one of its members; the church and God. There should be real affection between pastors and people as there was there. It reflected the closeness our Saviour chose to have with us - the Son of God has become a member of the human race. Paul also wanted them to see how a mature Christian coped with trouble (he was in prison at the time). It is the responsibility of older Christians to give an example of godliness, and show how Christ is faithful in all the trials of lie. If we shirk that responsibility we do not have the mind of Christ. It is easier to complain or assert ourselves - that is not Christian living. So: know the Lord's will; be filled with the Spirit; and submit to one another. Paul chose Tychicus as his messenger knowing they were more likely to listen to him than to a stranger. That is Christ's way, and we should be sensitive to our audience. Tychicus was 'a beloved brother and faithful servant'. He understood what it meant to 'submit to one anther', and that is why they loved him. Would we love or trust someone who was only in it for what they got out of it? Paul concludes by praying for those spiritual blessings that reflect the character of Christ. We should beware of being distracted from that, or putting peripheral things at the centre of our Christian life.
