The Pharisees and Herodians walked Jesus into a political trap with their flattering tongues. But Jesus saw right through their hidden agenda. And in just a few short phrases, he brilliantly distinguished between rendering obedience to human government and rendering ultimate allegiance only to God.
One way of looking at Jesus' politics is to see that he had a liberal-conservative agenda. But more accurately, he had the agenda of God's kingdom, which sometimes appears liberal and sometimes appears conservative.
Jesus' primary emphasis of this passage is that our whole lives must be surrendered to the God who formed us in His image. If Christians aren't willing to make that our focus and agenda, any political involvement is hypocritical at best.
