Phil Johnson: John, we've invited you into the studio this hour because we would like to talk with you about apostasy, falling away from the faith. What does it mean when someone who professes to be a believer and even seems to be a believer turns his back on Christ and falls away completely? This is a theme we see in Scripture and sometimes Scripture even refers to people like that as believers when they start out. At the end of John chapter 2, the Apostle John says, “Many believed on Him when they saw His miracles.” But the very next verse says, “But Jesus didn't commit Himself to them because He knew what was really in their hearts,” implying that that faith wasn't real. And then that becomes a theme in the gospel of John because in chapter 6, “Many of His disciples turned away and walked with Him no more.” They abandoned the faith completely.” It's a big topic, why do we choose it for this?

No Condemnation Well, to add on to what Jesse has to say I will go with this. He probably never really was a believer. He probably was going through the motions and now he wants to make a big scene about Christianity. He wants to do the shock and awe. I totally believe that this person really really wanted attention and basically he got it. We’re talking about it in the words of my favorite pastor Don Fortner, who is on sermon audio he has a message called no condemnation. He actually has like two or three versions of it over the years, but there’s just one specific version and I do not know how to point you to it but where it resonates every time I listen to it and for that man by the name of Steve as Pastor Fortner says in the sermon, no condemnation he says, and I paraphrase when Steve I’m using his name is alone at home at night he will find that his covers are too narrow. There is no escape from God from the conviction of the Holy Spirit so he can sit there during the day and say all this stuff to shock Christians to make us feel like there is no God, but at the end of the day he has to be with God when he is by himself when there is no friends he can call when there’s nothing he can do but be in his own skin. He will know God God is real and he knows that he’s just acting as an instrument

True eternal security There's no doubt there are people who never really believed. But the Bible has far too many instances of believers who fall aside to say that they aren't really believers. People can be Shipwrecked in the faith. This doesn't mean they are Shipwrecked in false faith, they are Shipwrecked in the faith. So some believers will be saved yet so as by fire. They will not be Faithful Servants of Christ. Just as we are sons of God by faith but this doesn't mean that every son is a pleasing Son of God. This is the better biblical balance.

Great Sermon! This so ministered to me. One thing in particular you said answered a question I posed to the Lord right before listening to this. Thank you and thank You, Lord Jesus. Even after all these years I am still in wonder and awe of Who He Is.
