Jude wrote this circular letter because certain persons had crept in to the Church by stealth. This has been going on for almost 2000 years. Consider the big picture, to fully appreciate how Jude fills a crucial place in the history of the early church.
Jude set aside his plans to write about soteriology in order to urge us to contend earnestly for the purity and integrity of Scripture. We have the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. The faith is the composite teaching of the Bible. There are many views of many facets of theology, but there is one set of truths that are THE faith. As Charles Spurgeon wrote in The Downgrade Controversy: "Commonly it is found in theology that that which is true is not new, and that which is new is not true."
Today we see Whom God Destroys so we can know the doom of false teachers. Jude is going to emphasize a crucial point in three verses: Just LOOKING LIKE you are blessed by God doesn't prove you are.
