The Self-Conscious Identity of the Child Jesus
These are the 1st words of Jesus recorded in Luke. In response to Mary's question (considered in the next sermon in this series), Jesus reveals that He is fully aware of His deity: He knows that He is the Son of God. How did the 12 yr old Jesus come to this awareness? By the study of the Scriptures. This trip at 12 yrs old, to Jerusalem at Passover, was a defining experience for Him. As He saw the sacrificial lambs & interacted with the scribes, all His private study of the Word filled His mind & the Spirit taught Him who He was: the Divine Messiah. We too come to the awareness of our spiritual sonship in a similar manner: as the Holy Spirit teaches us in the Scripture, we come to see ourselves as the people of God. We too are taught to cry out, "Abba, Father!"
