Paul's opponents were accusing him that the gospel he was preaching came with a license to sin, because he minimized the law. They claimed that by requiring faith alone, Christ was a servant of sin and did not care about sin or holiness. Paul is defending the gospel in verses 17-21, the implications the gospel has on the believer's life. The law increases sin, kills us, and brings us to Christ, making the law unnecessary anymore. The law doesn't justify, and it also doesn't sanctify. By looking to Christ believers are transformed from one degree of glory to another, they grow in holiness and obedience. The gospel is what produces true obedience.
