This is the first of two things that pleased the Father in relation to Christ's pre-eminence: it was his good pleasure, his resolve with regard to redemption, that in Jesus Christ all the fulness should dwell.
We note the location that Paul identifies: in him, as the one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Then there is the measure that Paul indicates: all the fulness, the full complement of saving grace, the exclusive totality of redemptive blessing. Finally, there is the permanence Paul implies: it dwells in him, it has its permanent residence in his person. It is always and only to be found in him.
There is no deficiency to make up, no supplement required, in connection with our Saviour and his salvation. This is good news for sinners, who find in Christ a fulness that addresses all our emptiness, and good news for saints, who need to recognize that this is the head of the body, the church, and that of this fulness we have all received, and grace for grace.
