In chapter 7, we are brought from the glorious victory of God over Jericho to the disastrous defeat of Israel before the city of Ai. It's tempting in our familiarity with modern warfare to think that Israel overreacts in their response to initial defeat. Another common mistake is to see this defeat as evidence of self-confidence. As we hear this passage our attention must be focused on the reason God gives for Israel's defeat. This sermon calls us to a life of trusting obedience. Unlike Israel, we have a covenant that cannot be broken because we stand before God in Jesus Christ. Our obedience is no less important, but it springs from thankfulness to God for His saving work in our lives.
