The church in Colossae wasn't under attack from a single strong opponent. Instead, there were a plethora of attacks, and most of them were rather subtle. So Paul wrote this letter to the Colossians with this purpose in mind. Grace and peace. This is what Paul is aiming at . This is the promise that is given to them and to us. Listening, learning, and practicing what Paul proclaims will discover to us grace and peace. Paul began with wives. Wives teach not only the family, but the church what submission looks like. It is an attitude of the heart. Husbands teach the family and the church what love looks like. Husbands are to be like Christ and give themselves up for her. Children are to obey in everything. This is a lesson we all still need to learn. We are not free to pick and choose which commands from God we are going to obey. To disobey is to rebel. How important are fathers? During the last three decades a lot of study was done regarding the place of women. But what was neglected during those years was the study of fathers. Then we began to see the devastating effects of an absentee father. 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes. 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes. 85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from father homes. 80% of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes. 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes. These numbers are from 2010. They haven't gotten any better over the last 7 years.
