In our hearts, the human heart, we want what we want. We want the position of honor and glory. In this passage, James and John believed that Jesus was about to receive His crown and they wanted to be in the seats of honor next to Him. Despite the fact that Jesus had just proclaimed that He was about to die. It is of great importance to respect and honor those with whom have been entrusted with responsibility. Within the Godhead, there is a hierarchy. Likewise, there are different roles in humanity; we are not all homogeneous. Rebellion, which is wanting to put yourself in charge, is countered by humility. If we genuinely want to spend time with Jesus, we should not let anyone or anything hold us back from doing so. We must pursue Jesus and His glory. We might want something in the world, and we might even get it. But the most significant need that all of us have is salvation.
