The last sermon on our series in worship is also our next sermon as we resume our series in Luke’s gospel. In the first few verses of Luke 8 we are told about some women who were contributing to the support of Jesus and His disciples so that they could carry on His work of proclaiming the gospel without having to spend most of their time working at carpentry or fishing. In the same way, your generous giving frees up some of our Pastors/Elders and our Missionaries to be fully devoted to the ministry of the Word. So building on the example of these ladies (in Luke 8:1-3) this week’s message will focus of how we worship the Lord in our giving.
We rarely speak about giving at GBC. Because so many churches and charities have had a bad testimony in this area and because I am paid through the generosity of God’s people and, I find it very hard to preach about giving. Rather than taking an offering we have a box in the back of the chapel. Sometimes new people have to ask around about how they can give to the church.
Giving to the Lord’s work is a blessing and a privilege. Just as those women had the privilege of serving Jesus and being used by God to provide for the practical needs of ministry, we are privileged to participate in God’s work through our giving. Like other aspects of worship, our heart attitude is crucial and God does more for us through this act of worship than we do for Him.
I am most grateful that your kindness has enabled me to be unmuzzled (see 1 Timothy 5:18) for almost 25 years. I am also thankful to report that the Lord provided for our finances in 2014 (especially at year end) beyond what most of us had anticipated.
