Perhaps you've been confused because Paul says a person is justified not by works, but James says a person is justified by his works. Is there really a conflict between what these two NT authors are saying? Not if we understand properly what they are saying, and if we understand the different opponents Paul and James are arguing against. Their positions do not war against each other; rather their positions war against differing opponents of biblical Christianity.
