After Daniel's heartfelt prayer, we find out God's response. His response was to send Gabriel when Daniel starts praying. Once again, Gabriel came to give Daniel understanding. When we see prophesies like this, it is easy because of the confusing nature of them to think that God didn't give them for us to understand. But every word that God gave, He gave it for us to be instructed by it. Some takes deeper thought and study than other verses, but they were all given so that we would grow in understanding. In this case, Gabriel gave Daniel a time frame for the things that would come to pass. From the time of the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Messiah comes is 69 weeks. Then the Messiah will be cut off for His people, but He will confirm the covenant with many for one week. Making the logical assumption that each 'week' is seven years, the this is describing a 490 year period, but there is much debate now about which 490 years as there was then. During the period before Christ's public ministry and until the destruction of Jerusalem, there were many false Messiahs who appeared. Everybody was expecting the Messiah to appear about that time because of this prophesy. We will consider the dates and how it matches with what happened on Sunday.
