This chapter presents three parables, but the main lesson can be found in our text: God rejoices greatly over every repenting sinner.
In the parable of the lost sheep, the lost sheep symbolises our souls wandering aimlessly, unable to find our way until the Lord intervenes.
Firstly, we note the shepherd's deep concern. Even with ninety-nine sheep safe, the shepherd is troubled by the absence of just one. Similarly, the Lord Jesus knows each of His own children and cares deeply for every soul.
Next, we observe the shepherd's action. Compelled by love, he cannot rest until he finds the lost sheep. Christ pursues us, first in His redemptive work and then in personal conversion. Just as the shepherd carries the sheep upon his shoulders, Christ lifts us from our lost estate, placing us on a new path where He cares for us, guides us, and offers us true rest.
Finally, we see the sheep brought home by the shepherd. It is Christ who brings us to repentance, igniting within us a desire to love and follow Him.
