Beginning in verse 7 of chapter 4 John is once again dealing directly with the matter of the assurance of our salvation. In the final major section of this book, he returns to and expands on an idea he touched on in chapter 3 – the love believers are to have for one another. But John is not referring to some nebulous type of love that is all soft and squishy so that we cannot really put our fingers on what it is. No, he is centering in on a certain kind of love that is self-sacrificing, motivated by goodwill, and implemented in action. It is a tangible love that results from comprehending our duty. In this sermon we only begin dealing with this section which runs into chapter 5. In this sermon we see that for us as believers love toward one another is our duty. As we fulfill our duty, we will have assurance of our salvation because the ability to do our duty comes from God as part of our salvation.
