The persecution of the godly is the divine legacy given unto all those who will live godly in Christ Jesus--a divine legacy with great promises and blessings. For it is given unto us "in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake(Phil 1:29)." Yet, this will still not spare us from "evil men and seducers, [who] will wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived." Such evil men and seducers are not amongst the ranks of the common sinner, but are men who profess religion, yet who deny its power. They are found amongst the sheep, yet they are wolves in sheep's clothing. The solution Paul gives Timothy is "but continue thou in the things thou hast learned and been assured of."
