Grace is God's favor through Christ to all men, (common grace) but especially His people (particular grace), who deserve His wrath. It is the heart of the Gospel. No wonder the most popular English hymn is arguably “Amazing Grace.”
“Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound that saved a soul like me. I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see.”
Did you catch the change? Google that phrase and you get plenty of hits. Nobody thinks they are a wretch, a miserable sinner. Grace is so amazing because it cannot be paid back. The thief on the cross would never be baptized, make restitution, attend church, take communion, sing a hymn, or given offering. He had nothing to offer Christ, no way to pay him back. Neither do we. |
