The book of Malachi shows a somewhat hypothetical discourse between Malachi and the malcontent Jews who had returned from exile and were living back in the land.
God declares His love for Israel, and their disdainful response, "How have you loved us?" shows their ungrateful attitude toward the Lord of all the universe.
God's response is instructive, not stooping to their demand to remind of them of everything He has done for them, but to remind them of how He has judged their closest enemies, their brothers the Edomites.
