In this chapter we see judgement preached against the wicked city of Nineveh. Then we see the miraculous repentance among the entire city. We see revival. Last week we looked at the role/responsibility of the prophet in this revival. Today we are going the response and the responsibility of the Ninevites, of those being evangelized. For context, I am going to read the entire chapter but the sermon will focus on verses 6-10. The passage is nicely structured for this type of analysis. As we discussed last week, v1-4 deal with Jonah’s commission and his actions in this revival. Verse 5 gives us the summary of the response of the citizens of Nineveh - They believed God. Verse 6 - 9 sequentially take place between verses 4 and 5. Between Jonah’s preaching of judgement and the Ninevites response of faith and repentance. These verses allow us to drill down into the process of repentance. Lastly in verse 10, we see that due the faith and repentance displayed by the Ninevites, God relented of His judgment on the city.
