The Jerusalem congregation identified Stephen as a man "full of the Spirit and wisdom," and God affirmed his selection by granting him the fullness of grace and power in the Spirit. Though not an apostle in the formal sense, Stephen executed apostolic ministry in signs and wonders and powerful proclamation of Christ and His gospel. As it had with the apostles, this public ministry soon drew the attention of the Jews, and Stephen found himself engaged in a disputation that culminated with his arrest and trial before the Sanhedrin. He, too, would proclaim the gospel of Christ to Israel's rulers, but God had appointed him for an even greater testimony; Stephen was to be the first to bear witness to Christ, not merely in word and deed, but in death. In his death, as well as in the scope and depth of his scriptural witness, Stephen represented a crucial advance in the Church's life and mission.
