When our Lord crossed over the brook Kidron, it was the last mention of that body of water in the whole of Scripture.
Our Savior was fulfilling the type of King David, whose crossing of the same brook during the rebellion of Absalom was the Scripture's very first mention of that brook.
In between, the brook Kidron was a place of repudiation and waste and rejection. It was the place where the idols were taken to be destroyed in Asa, Hezekiah, and Josiah's reigns.
When David crossed over, the people wept. When Jesus passed over Kidron, only He knew the sorrow that would befall the people of Jerusalem for their rejection of His kingdom.
David fled the wrath of the people. Christ went willingly to receive not only the people's wrath (for he would be betrayed across Kidron in Gethsemane) but more importantly He crossed over Kidron to surrender Himself to the wrath of God for the sake of His people.
David's passing over Kidron yielded no benefit for his people. It was a time of needless sorrow and loss and violence.
But Christ accomplished the salvation of His people after He crossed Kidron. It was His entrance to Calvary and the Cross and His Resurrection and exhaltation at God's right hand.
One day, like David, the Lord Jesus will return to Jerusalem in power and glory. His return will be a most joyous occasion for those who have trusted Him during His sojourn across the brook.
