Let us admit that the Church is diminishing in its impact on our society and a primary reason for this is that it is no longer perceived to deal in the transaction of great things. No longer is it considered to be the embassy of mysterious and grand truths. As long as its trade was that of eternal truths and of the mystery of everlasting salvation it had some pull on the imaginations of people. But now it is considered little more than a purveyor of political, psychological, and social programs. In our passage the author calls men to hold onto their profession of faith in Christ in light of the grandness, the bigness, the greatness of their profession. If today we would once again let the church set its heart on that which makes our faith great we could begin to reverse the trend in the West of dismissive attitudes towards the church and towards Christianity.
