While electioin is a free and sovereign choice of God the Father, that choice is rooted in an imcomprehensible, particular love of God for those utterly unworthy of his goodness. Without this love of the Father, Christ would not have come to redeem us. The sermon exlains from a number of Scriptures how the "foreknowledge" in the text is not God's foresight of what the elect would do of their own accord, but his foreloving them before they were even created. Christians can never love the Lord Jesus enough, but they should love the Father, too, whose imcomprehensive love is the source of their salvation. The text also shows that the the divine decree of election achives its goal by sanctifying the elect in time and conforming them to his moral laws. Election, then, guarantees the salvation of those chosen, their sanctification and conformity to Christ. This is the "golden chain of salvation". |
