1. Face it! We are both Spiritual and Fleshly. a. The believer is neither entirely spiritual nor fleshly. This is a fact (cf. v. 1) b. The Spirit refers to the regenerate ‘part’ of the person. The Flesh refers to the remnant of corruption in him (cf. Gal 5:17).
2. Realise that the Flesh & the Spirit have different desires a. The flesh desires pleasure and recognition (cf. Gal 5:16; 1 Jn 2:16). b. The Spirit desires God’s Glory (cf. Gal 5:5).
3. Either Walk in Bondage or Freedom. a. The way of the flesh is the way of bondage, fear and condemnation (cf. v. 1, 15). b. The way of the Spirit is the way of freedom, assurance and confidence (v. 1-2).
4. Either Seek Self & Misery, or Christ & Joy. a. The man who walks according to the flesh seeks his own glory and finds misery. b. The man who walks according to the Spirit seeks Christ and finds joy.
5. Drift Not! Choose to be Spiritual. a. There is no such thing as a Carnal Christian who will be saved as by fire. b. But the Christian can choose to fulfil the lust of the flesh or to be led by the Spirit.
