1 Ephraim's food is the wind, and he goes after the east wind: deceit and destruction are increasing day by day; they make an agreement with Assyria, and take oil into Egypt. Here Hosea makes a statement to the nation of Israel. Ephraim is the main tribe of the ten tribes of Israel, and they are trying to get hold of the wind – it's impossible. They are worshipping idols and all kinds of things are coming down on them. Then he talks about the east wind, a destructive wind that kills crops and cattle. He is warning them that if they continue with the attitude they have, it will cost them dearly. They made an agreement with Assyria in the north and Egypt in the south, two of the great world powers at the time, and they were using diplomacy like we do today in trying to talk to other nations to make peace, and it was all a bunch of lies. The northern 10 tribes were trying to make a peace-pact with the Assyrians and an agreement to trade goods (commerce) with the Egyptians. The same thing is going on today, same diplomacy, same concept, and same lies. The peace talks will fail and result in the greatest war ever. 2 The Lord has a cause against Judah, and will give punishment to Jacob for his ways; he will give him the reward of his acts. Judah, you are down there doing the wrong things, too. The 2 southern tribes will reap what they sow. 3 In the body of his mother he took his brother by the foot, and in his strength he was fighting with God; Jacob had the power of God when he followed the will of God.
