Psalm 88 has no answers – what starts out as a glimmer of hope in verse 1, spirals down into darkness and isolation. This Psalm is for us – for when we don’t have all the answers – when all we can see is our own pain, suffering, and confusion. When we feel utterly and completely alone – without friends. When we feel even God has become our enemy and has turned His back on our heart-felt pleas. God placed this Psalm in scripture to show us that godly men before us have felt this way and to show us what to do when we find ourselves in the midst of the Valley of the Shadow of Death.
