In this section of Habakkuk, we see the famous verse, "The just shall live by faith," which is quoted three times in the NT. By the Providence of God, this happens to be Reformation Sunday, so it is timely. Faith is a humble thing. The one who has faith is contrasted with the proud man, whose soul is not right within him. Proud people rely on themselves and their works and their ceremonies to earn approval with God. The righteous are humble and live by faith in Christ. Faith is the instrument by which we receive the perfect obedience of Jesus, who kept the whole Law and did everything God required of man. We receive eternal life through faith and we "live" by faith from day to day.
