The lesson is that we are to be prepared in our minds for suffering for Him and our confidence is not to be in the things of this life but in the sure things of our hope in all His promises to us when He comes back for His body the church. Peter calls us to holiness in all our behavior. While we are citizens of heaven, we are ambassadors for Jesus Christ here on earth. Since the world hated our Lord and put Him to death, it will also hate us, as we are conformed to Him. Here we look at the first two of four commands as to how we are to live in a fallen world. Servants are to be submissive with all respect even to those bosses who are unreasonable and perverse. This is because of our conscience toward Him, in other words we are moved to obedience because of His love shed abroad in our hearts and not because of fear of punishment, as our conscience reminds us about what would be pleasing to Him. We also know that God is a God of justice and all of the times when we have been called on to suffer unjustly for Him are going to be judged perfectly when He calls the lost before Him at the great white throne judgment. Persecution of the believer is inevitable since our Lord has left us in a Christ hating world, with His work causing us to be conformed to the One that the world hates. God uses persecution and other hard things to train us, and equip us and to prove the reality of the faith we believe we have.
