The second paper, "The Reformation Hope: A Biblical Survey of Expectation Here and Hereafter" was given by Pastor David Silversides, Minister of Loughbrickland Reformed Presbyterian Church. This paper was based on Hebrews 12.1-3 and showed why the witnesses during the Reformation had such hope and confidence as to be ready to die for the faith. (1) The Reformers found peace with God because God justifies the ungodly on the basis of Christ's death as the atonement not merely an example to influence us. Man can never atone for sin but the Reformers knew that their sins were forgiven. Trust in Christ brought forgiveness and peace with God. (2) The Reformers believed that God was in control of all things. God's control is not only common but specific and his choice and power guarantees salvation as hearts are opened as was Lydia's. (3) The Reformers believed that the Lord is in control of the believer and the Church in this world. The Gospel cause is not a forlorn and failing cause and the future is not haphazard. (4) The Reformers believed the Lord controls the issues of death. God punishes sin eternally but Christ said, "It is finished". Believers are free from guilt and, being made clean, will be among the spirits of just men made perfect. (5) The Reformers believed in the resurrection. The last enemy will be destroyed. All our enemies will be destroyed, the redeemed will be immortal as to body and soul and the universe will be renewed. We have hope concerning the here and now and the hereafter.
