The people from this passage wanted a king who will do their bidding. The same is relatively true today. Even though these people wanted a king, they wanted a king who would do what they wanted them to do. Our flesh wants us to protect our own lives. Why are Christians at the frontline of fighting Ebola? Because although they are not eager to die, they are not afraid to what God asks, even unto death. When we obey God, we will not be wasteful. If we take our life and pour it out, it will not be wasted. Jesus taught in such a way that some purposely would not understand and in way that others hated Him. Instead Jesus was sent by the Father, to die. Jesus commands the same for His believers. We are to live in such a way that we follow God's will, unto death in this world. When it comes down to it, do we really believe we should lay down our lives? When you know Jesus is in control, you do not let fear take control. We should not desire to make God do our will, but to do His will alone. We are not in control, God is. If we really love God more than life itself, we will not be focused on everyone not liking us and public opinion. Are we more concerned about popularity than what God says. If we live life opposed to what God says we will burn in the Eternal Lake of Fire. Our enemies are not Mayors, Judges, or accreditation boards, those are being moved by evil spirits. Our battle is against those spiritual forces that oppose God. Jesus is Lord and I have to be ready to lay down my life down in order to follow Him.
