"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." Proverbs 14:12
It has been years. David, his men, and their families have been fleeing the dogged pursuit of Saul. They are exhausted and long for rest and a place to call home. Until now, David has appeared to be an almost flawless hero of the faith, trusting his future and that of his men to the wisdom and promises of the Lord. However, Chapter 27 shows us his frail humanity as he seeks his desire for rest by following the ways of men. In turning from the ways of God, David becomes ensnared in his own lies and is pulled deeper and deeper into darkness.
Despite Chapter 27 being a "godless" chapter, the Lord shows us the graciousness of His forgiveness and faithfulness to His promises in more ways than one. Our hope is not in David nor our works but in God, who secures our hope, brings his promises to fruition, and delivers us to rest.
