When we are laden with a heavy burden, we ought to think about the great burden our Lord Jesus bore for us.
Many professions bear heavy burdens: doctors, firemen, airline pilots. In their hands are the lives of those in their care.
How often men don't even recognize the burden they ought to bear: lawyers who are defending the innocent, but don't seem to really care; politicians, whose decisions can wreck a nation, yet they seem oblivious to the danger.
Parents bear a heavy burden in raising their children, but so few seem to notice!
This week, the preacher has been sharing a burden with a dear family that is under attack by malicious grandparents, and the court, and the state legislature. The mother and daddy have tried to shield their young children from the dangerous influence of their grandparents, who have tried to destroy the boys' love for their daddy, and tried to undermine the family. The state law is against the parents, allowing the grandparents to sue for visitation. The court has ordered that access be given, and the children have been harmed.
The burden is great, but we should remember that no burden was ever greater than our Lord Jesus bore! On Him was the eternal life of His people! He bore the awful burden of being our sacrifice and taking the weight of our sins upon Himself!
Nobody but Jesus could take that burden! No wonder He was "a man of sorrows." He always knew the terrible price He would have to pay. It weighed heavily upon Him. He might have tried to escape it. He cried out in Gethsemane, in anguish and woe.
At Calvary, none could help. Thus He bore the burden in loneliness. But He saw salvation for the thief there, Hallelujah!
