Because the apostles preach the resurrected Christ, the outpouring of the Spirit and the guilt of the Jewish rulers in murdering Jesus Christ, the Sanhedrin plot to kill them, but Gamaliel stands up and says that they should be careful that they not be found to be fighting God. These sound like wise words until you remember that people were being healed because the shadow of Peter was falling upon them. People from all over the country were coming to be healed in the name of Jesus Christ, but that evidence is still not enough for the rulers of Judea. We can never present enough evidence for someone to believe in God. It is the mercy of God to give ears that hear. Another thing that we should take away from this is that the world hates Christ and those who do the work of Christ. This should be our expectation and we should never expect that the blessings that we do for our neighbors will ever overcome for long the hatred that the world has for those who are not its own. Lastly, as you consider this passage, consider the reaction of the apostles to being beaten, they rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for the sake of the name of Christ. Are we ashamed of the gospel or do we rejoice when we are counted worthy to suffer shame?
