Paul continues to emphasize the wisdom of God which is Christ crucified. The "rulers of this age" are wicked human and spiritual rulers who oppose God's purposes in Christ. In their vile hatred, they unwittingly furthered God's intention to save sinners and bring them ultimately to glory. The applications for this sermon all come from passages in Luke which show how Jesus Christ came to save sinners. The "Son of Man" references in Luke/Acts identify Christ as the "Son of Man" predicted in Daniel 7:13, 14. In Luke 19:10, Jesus said "the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost." Those who do not know they are lost and find glory in other ways, rejected Christ. It is utterly ironic that the Lord of Glory allowed Himself to be mocked, blasphemed, and crucified by those who wanted to heap maximum shame upon Him. Yet, unexpected people realized they were lost. Most notably, the criminal on the cross who recognized he was lost, found salvation. When Jesus said, "today you will be with Me in Paradise," that is literally what happened. "Today" as the day of Messianic salvation is thematic in Luke.
