Dangerous Territory This sermon was hard to follow. The reasoning that the pastor laid out in using the Disciple's Prayer for identifying the 12 marks of a saint. I wasn't able to follow it, but then maybe my eyes haven't been opened. Who knows?
Where the pastor went off track with this sermon was with one statement "If you can't forgive then you (think) you're not a sinner". That's patently not true for the elect.
I, myself have wrestled with forgiveness for years in prayer. All I can do is ask God to help me to forgive. I can't just make up my mind to forgive; neither can anyone else, including the pastor. That was a very presumptuous statement on his part. Very dangerous.
Pastors need to learn humility in the handling of God's word. Spurgeon said "I can assure you that I never address you without feeling that it would be better for me to engage in breaking stones on the road or in any handicraft however hard it might be, than to have to preach the gospel; because if I am unfaithful to the many souls committed to my charge, what must be my portion at the last?"
Luther said that he never went into the pulpit without his knees knocking together through fear, even though he was a man of dauntless courage.
