John is given a measuring rod to measure a temple, its altar, and its worshipers. Based on Ezekiel's temple (chapters 40-48), John gives no dimensions but is instructed to leave out the outer court. In other words, John is shown that the sanctuary, symbolizing God's presence, is protected space—protecting His servants and their service (altar, Rom. 12:1, 2).
We must be careful not to interpret the temple by its OT usage, but as it is redefined in the NT as the true church (1 Cor. 3:16, 17).
The outer court, while belonging to the temple complex, is left out because God will allow those who reject God to persecute the church (trample it under foot) for this gospel age.
This setting prepares us for the introduction of the two witnesses and their sacrificial service to God.
