Matthew's genealogy is presented in three movements: 1. Abraham to David (v. 2-6a) 2. The Monarchy (v. 6b-11) 3. The Deportation (v. 12-16)
He is drawing a connection with the Messiah and the history of the whole nation.
In what sense is Jesus the Son of Abraham and the Son of David? Jesus is the one through whom God will bless all the nations of the world, and the fulfilment of the promise God made to David. Matthew is building a royal line.
