P rayer combined with fasting is a great spiritual weapon in the Christian's arsenal against the world, the flesh, and the Devil. That's why Satan takes such aggressive steps through the modern versions to destroy or neutralize this very important weapon.
The relative importance of any particular biblical subject can easily be determined by studying the degree of vehemence with which it is attacked in the modern versions. The modern versions' treatment of fasting is an excellent case in point. Fasting is a sorely neglected Christian discipline, relegated by many to a practice only associated with the Old Testament saint. For this reason, most Christians have never fasted a single time in their lives.
The Purpose of Fasting.
Fasting should be an important element of every Christian's life. When God's intervention is desired in a particular matter, fasting is one means to this end. Fasting is a practice which enables the soul and spirit to overcome the desires of the flesh. The Apostle Paul states in the New Testament that he had power with God because he kept his body in subjection. Paul did not allow his body and the desires of the flesh to control his life. As various aspects of fasting are discussed, keep the following verse in mind.
