Israel is the Olive Tree. Its roots are Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; it is nourished in God's covenant promises.
Throughout the Old Testament, from time to time, branches were broken off because of unbelief. At the time of the First Coming of the Lord Jesus, many natural branches were broken off, and other branches, taken from a wild Gentile tree, were grafted in among the believing Jewish branches, partaking along with them of the rich sap of Patriarchal blessing.
But there is coming a blessed future when the Jewish people as a whole will embrace Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah of Israel. Then they will be grafted back into the Olive Tree in order to share once again in the rich sap of their natural roots.
