The true expression of the Counter-Reformation came in The Council of Trent, convened officially in December 1545, just two months before Luther's death, and continuing sporadically until 1563, the year before Calvin's death. The Council resisted all calls for doctrinal reform and instead stated dogmatically the very positions that had generated the Reformation at its beginning. These dogmatic statements from Trent continue to be the governing force of Roman Catholic doctrine to this day. The Second Vatican Council, convened in 1962, affirmed the pronouncements of Trent and compelled all participants to sign statements to that effect. Thus, to understand the Council of Trent is to have a clear idea of the teaching of Romanism and the fact that there can be no compromise between true Protestantism and true Romanism.
