It is not David’s action in seeking nor in taking refuge in God which preserves or saves him. It is only the action of Almighty God which preserves and saves. The king must be preserved for the kingdom to be preserved. The kingdom is dependent upon its sovereign head. Without the head, there is no kingdom. And thus, David here prays for preservation. Why . . or upon what basis does he plea? The basis for his plea is found in his trust in God. David takes refuge in Him, and upon this refuge he cries out. Here then in Psalm 16, we see that the cry for preservation from all those who trust in the Holy One, Christ Jesus, is always heard and answered affirmatively by our Lord and God.
