James, the half-brother of Jesus, became one of the principal leaders of the early church in Jerusalem. In his epistle that we call the Book of James, he asks a rhetorical question: “Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?” The answer, of course, is that they cannot. Radically different waters come from different sources. This is true also of ideas. Ideas become the foundation stones of cultural norms, and over time they become cultural orthodoxies. And we live in a time when we are witnessing a great clash of two divergent orthodoxies—a conflict that has been brewing for thousands of years.
