In this portion of the Gospel of John certain Greek converts or God-fearers seek out an introduction to the Lord Jesus through the disciple Philip. This marks the very beginning of the Gospel going out to the whole world further described in the book of Acts, but for this work to blossom the Lord must first die and be resurrected. The Lord shows his love for the elect in dying to bear fruit. Christ lived with the urgent purpose of losing His life for an eternal inheritance, and His own redeemed elect must also live with an eternal purpose to please the Lord rather than themselves.
