Archbishop Leighton, in his well-known commentary on 1 Peter, declines to comment on this particular portion of Scripture. He says that it would be easier for him to lead us into the depths than to bring us back out again. And that's a timely warning. This isn't an easy passage. And it isn't an easy subject. It is the cause of much controversy. In fact, when the Banner of Truth reprinted Arthur Pink's classic book, “The Sovereignty of God,” they left out the chapter called “The Sovereignty of God in Reprobation.” And the did so without comment. I'm not sure what to make of that. Maybe they wanted the book to have a broader appeal, or maybe somebody had some trouble with something in the chapter. But I just point this out because I want you to know that we are wading here in deep waters. This is a series of sermons on the “hard words” in the Westminster Confession of Faith. And I want us all to recognize these for what they are, hard words.
