The book of Habakkuk addresses the problem of evil and injustice. Last week we saw Habakkuk’s first complaint about the wickedness in Judah. The Lord answers that He is sending the Babylonians to punish Judah. This creates new problems for Habakkuk as the Babylonians were more wicked (or less righteous) than the people of Judah. How can the Lord allow this?
The great British preacher Martyn Lloyd-Jones points out that Habakkuk models how we can approach the extremely difficult questions about God’s action (or inaction). My sermon will follow his basic outline.
1. Be careful how you speak of God or to God. 2. Remember what you already know about God (especially His attributes). 3. Apply what you know to your problem. 4. If all else fails, wait on the Lord for the answer (2:1).
