While Jesus didn't make a mistake by choosing Judas these men realized they were just men and didn't want to make a mistake that would really mess things up. They had all probably thought highly of Judas at one time and that seemed like a temptation now. These men needed to be able to move passed Judas, keep an even number so no one is left alone to do the work of Jesus, maintain the original number of apostles as Jesus had prescribed, and dare I say to keep themselves busy trying to do something for God. Their efforts here helped to establish a necessary pattern of dependence on God. Too many Christians today don't seek God's will they just go and do it and sometimes wonder why things went wrong.
