The final chapter of Leviticus, upon first glance, seems like an anomaly. Every other chapter of Leviticus is filled with commands and imperatives; but this chapter speaks of an optional act, a 'special' vow that is not required, but offered over and above what is required.
Some liberal scholars suggest that this was a later add-on and not part of the original text.
However there is a better way to understand this chapter. This chapter points us to the fitting response to grace. What should a man do, who used to be a slave in Egypt and has been set free, made a citizen of the people of God, granted a perpetual inheritance in the promised land? Is there any gift that would be too excessive to express gratitude for all that has been given?
So the fitting response to grace is gratitude and the presentation of myself and all I have to God as a living sacrifice.
