The scribes and Pharisees were considered the holiest men on the face of the earth and experts in the Law of God by the Jews who lived in their day. Yet Jesus made it very clear that unless His hearers' righteousness far exceeded that of the scribes and Pharisees they would by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. The same is true of every last one of you today as well: the entrance requirement of heaven is a perfect righteousness of heart that walks in unswerving conformity to the Law of God. Although Jesus' words seem harsh, they are in reality full of mercy and compassionate love, for Christ is showing us all that the righteousness required by the Law of God is unattainable by the best of men. If we would enter into heaven we must repent of all our sin and forsake all confidence in our own good works to save us and we must actively place our faith in the Living Christ alone for His salvation. And so, by faith, God the Father will clothe us in the perfect heart righteousness of Christ Himself, for God the Son made satisfaction for our sins upon the cross.
