Originally preached at the Ministers' Conference of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church at Westminster Theological Seminary in September 1967, this message was published in print form soon afterward by the Banner of Truth Trust and owing to its continued relevance has seen several reprints over the 30 years since.
In response to a request to address a group of assembled ministers and ministerial students, Pastor Martin examines the Man, the Message and the Manner of contemporary preaching and offers a biblically based diagnosis of 'what's wrong with preaching today' and a prescription for becoming more effective communicators of the Word of God.
**General Outline**

Great Sermon! Hoping that our pastor is helped by this message as he is concerned about not feeding his flock and losing church attendance and depression is setting in on him . Bless you Pastor Martin.

Great Sermon! Some sermons bring tears of sorrow and a great need for intercessory prayer for the Body of Christ that we walk worthy of our call; in all things.
This was one of those sermons.
Thanks, and may God continue to bless you and your listeners.

Wonderful Sermon! So many excellent points -- so powerfully preached! Rev. Martin said the pastor's regular personal devotions and practical piety in his own home are foundational to solid and effective preaching. He also said the Pastor must be motivated first by a desire to glorify God (in the pulpit) and provide helpful application (which will be easy to do for the shepherd who truly loves and desires the sanctification of his sheep). He concluded by stating that contemporary Reformed preaching (in 1967) did not always accurately define true biblical faith and repentance. A great sermon as true today as the day it was preached!

The Spurgeon of Today! I am sure Pastor Martin would not publicly accept or acknowledge the title "Spurgeon of today", but I must confess that this man has been gifted by God through diligent and hard work, to open the scripture and preach it with such power.
Every Pastor today should listen to this sermon and make a commitment to do the understand and appreciate content of this message.
This message is preached with authority in the Spirit. May it continue to bring much encouragement to others!
Oh God! Where is the Pulpit Power! Oh Lord, help us all.

Timeless! Thank you! I'm not an elder, but the principles shown forth in this sermon are convicting and I trust useful as I lead our small family.
With much gratitude,

Question? My question is- How is Mr Martin so powerful in his preaching as much in 1967 as he is now in 2007?
A true man of God! Thankyou for your ministry.

A Much Needed Message This is a message of great usefulness to Pastors. Even though it was originally delivered almost 40 years ago, the content is just as applicable today. I particularly appreciated the admonitions to actually connect with one's hearers and not preach as though one were supremely unconcerned whether the congregation heard or not. The message does cut out a couple of minutes before the end however.
